I have a really rowdy year 10 class who I attempted to teach supply and demand to. Parts of the lesson went as well as it ever does with this group others didn't.
Announcing that we were working on a very important topic and that it was jam donuts went well. Deciding on which student would eat the most jam donuts also went well together with the source of the donuts.
Once we began to apply the concepts of demand to how many donuts can the student eat and how the price will go down, some lost interest. Equally with the supply side.
Just about all of them got lost when I introduced the Big Mac Index and everyone struggled with the maths.
So the principle of using stuff they can engage with is proved once again. Everyone knows what a jam donut is. Maths is a challenge to this group.
